DRILLS – Why is it bad to use a normal drill to drill concrete?

I understand if you are core drilling, but if your just drilling holes for anchors, whats the difference???? Why is it better for the drill????

All good answers, and it’s not BAD to use a normal Drill Bit, it’s just inefficient, and will wear out a normal bevel point bit designed for shaving the drilled material, not to mention having to drill more RPMs to get the same depth.

Both wood and metal are actually shaved when drilled. Concrete doesn’t shave because it is made up of hard, bonded particulates (little pieces of rock basically).

A normal drill bit for wood (crown point or pilot point), or for metal (bevel point) will mainly be polishing, not shaving, concrete. And the concrete will be grinding down the drill bit.

A hammer drill helps because it repeatedly strikes the end of the bore and breaks up the particulates so they can be augered out of the bore as dust by the fluting on the bit.

If you don’t have a hammer drill, you can use a masonary bit, which is hardened for concrete, brick, or tile, and has the “wings” mentioned by one answerer, and these help chew up the concrete for removal, so it can usually be used without the striking effect of a hammer drill.
